In 1923, Adolphe Leroy and Rose Merlin, associates in private and business life,[clarification needed] opened a business of American surplus. Strengthened by this first success, they decided to sell DIY products and supplies at moderate prices. In 1960, the firm was named Leroy Merlin. It became a precursor, as it was the first company to offer free delivery services.
Generally established on the outskirts of major towns and cities, Leroy Merlin stores are large centres (9000 m2 on average) providing self-service and sales assisted services. Its business is centred on six main sectors: DIY, building, gardening, sanitary equipment, renewable energy, and interior decoration.

Following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, many international, particularly Western, companies pulled out of Russia. Leroy Merlin, however, on 11 March announced that it has no plans to reduce its operations in Russia, where it operates 143 stores. On 17 March, they cut off the Ukrainian office from corporate communications and stated that they would increase supplies to the Russian Federation.
Leroy Merlin has a strong presence in Russia and generates 18% of its turnover there. In 2020, the company paid $335 million in taxes as a result of their operations in Russia. The company has been criticized for making indirect contributions to the Russian military effort.
On the night of 20-21 March 2022, a shopping centre in Kyiv housing a Leroy Merlin shop was bombed. Shop employees called on the company to leave Russia, as did the Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Honcharenko. The latter, elected in the constituency of Odessa and member of the Ukrainian delegation to the parliamentary assembly of the Council of Europe, broadcast a video. The video was shot in front of the devastated store.
In a statement to AFP, Adeo, Leroy Merlin’s holding company, said a closure would be considered a «premeditated bankruptcy» and says that it has an «employer’s responsibility towards (its) 45,000 employees and their families who have been contributing to the building of Leroy Merlin Russia for the past 18 years». However, there are reports of insults and threats from customers following the company’s continued operations in Russia.

Руководитель одного из магазинов Леруа Мерлен сообщил своим клиентам о том, что гипермаркет продолжит работу в штатном режиме. Изменения «на верху» никак не повлияют на покупателях и на работоспособности сети полюбившихся россиянам строительных магазинов в целом.
По словам директора пермского гипермаркета Сергея Николаева, фирма планирует перейти на автономный режим работы. Что это означает? Это значит, что в РФ придет высшее руководство компании из России. Сама сеть продолжит работу в штатном режиме. Клиенты даже не заметят никаких изменений.
Во-первых, компания в приоритете, не арендует помещения в торговых центрах, а магазины располагаются в отдельных зданиях, как правило, принадлежащих самой фирме. То есть, российские предприниматели не ощутят на себе последствий от закрытия французской фирмы.
Да и для клиентов уход не должен быть таким трагическим. Да, за столько лет существования на российском рынке люди привыкли к Leroy Merlin точно также, как и к другим закрывшимся иностранным фирмам. Но, как говорится «пусто место не бывает», и на смену этому строительному гипермаркету придут другие.
Главными конкурентами Leroy Теплицкий называет такие российские компании, как «Домовой» и «МаксиДом».
На официальном сайте группы Adeo появилось сообщение о том, что компания продает все свои магазины в России. Фирма проработала на российском рынке около 18-ти лет, и вот настала пора прекращать сотрудничество.
Как не пытались супруги Адольф Леруа и Роза Мерлен (основатели сети) сохранить бизнес в России, у них это не получилось.
Клиентов успокаивают, они не заметят никаких последствий продажи магазинов. Высока вероятность того, что после сделки все вывески торговой марки придется ликвидировать. Теперь это будет не Leroy Merlin, а нечто другое. Что именно, пока неизвестно.

Ассоциация работает в интересах семьи – потомков Жерара Мюлье (1906–1989), основавшего бизнес в 1943 г. Поглощением Leroy Merlin занимался его сын Gérard Mulliez – основатель магазинов «Ашан».
Именно он в 1979 г. купил половину бизнеса у основателей торговой сети – супругов Роз Мерлен и Адольфа Леруа. В 1981 г. сделка по выкупу Leroy Merlin была завершена, на тот момент под этим брендом работало всего 33 магазина во Франции.

Заявление о продолжении работы в России
11 марта 2022 года Леруа Мерлен заявил продолжает работу в России и готов к увеличению поставок и расширению ассортимента. Строительный ритейлер сделал это заявление на фоне того, как множество зарубежных компаний приняли решение остановить деятельность в РФ.
«Несмотря ни на какие слухи, мы продолжаем работать и не планируем останавливать деятельность компании, — говорится в письме, подписанном заместителем гендиректора ООО «Леруа Мерлен Восток» Эриком Пуле и директором по взаимодействию с поставщиками Анной Гончаровой.
В обращении также сказано, что в связи со сложившейся ситуацией компания не будет штрафовать партнеров за срывы поставок, однако ожидает от них «выполнения уровня сервиса». Отмечается, что ритейлер рассмотрит запросы на изменение закупочных цен в сокращенные сроки, но необоснованные предложения принимать не будет.

Французский DIY-ретейлер Леруа Мерлен (входит в группу Adeo) продолжит работу в России. Более того — после ухода некоторых игроков с российского рынка компания готова увеличить число поставок и расширить существующий ассортимент товаров.

Суд обязал предпринимателя вернуть 150 млн рублей ритейлеру Леруа Мерлен
Арбитражный суд Московской области взыскал со смоленского ИП Виктора Кривулина, владельца прав на товарный знак «Торнадо», около 150 миллионов рублей в пользу российской «дочки» французского ритейлера Леруа Мерлен , следует из опубликованной резолютивной части определения суда.
Суд произвел поворот исполнения судебного акта – вынесенного еще в июне 2020 года постановления Десятого арбитражного апелляционного суда. Этим постановлением суд утвердил мировое соглашение между Кривулиным и ООО «Леруа Мерлен Восток», по которому «дочка» Леруа Мерлен выплатила предпринимателю около 150 миллионов рублей. Но впоследствии мировое соглашение было отменено вышестоящими инстанциями.

Запущенная DIY-ритейлером Leroy Merlin сеть магазинов для корпоративных клиентов «Максипро» не получила дальнейшего развития. Компания закрыла один из двух объектов в Подмосковье, недалеко от Зеленограда, и теперь он будет работать только на обработку онлайн-заказов. Торговую точку трансформируют под новый формат. В «Ашане» обещают начислять повышенный кэшбэк за покупку некоторых товаров:

- 10% за маслины и оливки;
- 7% за товары женской гигиены;
- 5% на остальную продукцию.
Далее кэшбэк можно потратить на оплату до 100% стоимости товаров. Акция продлится до конца апреля.
Леруа Мерлен начисляет по 5% кэшбэка за каждую покупку своим постоянным покупателям, которые предъявят на кассе накопительную бонусную карту. Правда повышенный кэшбэк поступит только при оплате покупки кредиткой или дебетовой карточкой Тинькофф.

В Подмосковье строится новый гипермаркет «Леруа Мерлен»
В поселке Заречье Одинцовского округа ведется строительство нового гипермаркета «Леруа Мерлен». Информация о том, что сеть уходить из России не могла не отразится на ходе строительства. Ведь, для кого теперь будет предназначаться это здание, если фирма больше не планирует работать в России?
Отмечается, что недавно на стройке Главгосстройнадзор Подмосковья провел профвизит. Проверка показала, строителям осталось завершить устройство фасада, выполнить монтаж внутренних инженерных систем, провести благоустройство и некоторые другие работы. Сдать объект планируется в мае 2023 г.
